OverviewThe Wirtschaftliche Forschungsgesellschaft mbH (Economic Research Society), also known as WIFO, is a German company that constructed and operated underground storage and production facilities for fuels and oils during the interwar period and into World War II. In mid 1936, construction of 10 secure underground storage and filling facilities started, each with a capacity of 100,000 to 200,000 cubic meters. When World War II started in 1939, the storage facilities were 80% full.
