Overview

Type944

Several Type94 TK tankettes at the Gate of China, Nanjing.

The Type94 Light Armoured Car (九四式軽装甲車), known by its prototype name Tokushu Keninsha (特殊牽引車) is a Japanese tankette. The TK was based loosely on the Carden-Loyd Mk VI, after testing was conducted by the IJA. Despite being a tank by all measures, it was designated as an armoured car, as cavalry was not allowed operation of tanks. The TK was used to great effect in armoured spearheads during the Second Sino-Japanese War, despite its minimal armour thickness, as Chinese anti-tank options were limited. Much like the Type92 Heavy Armoured Car, production improvements to the Type94 TK did not have official variant names. Changes include lengthening of the chassis and lowering and up-scaling of the rear idler wheel, in turn reducing ground pressure. Eventually, the standard 6.5mm Type91 was replaced with a with a 7.7mm Type97. In late 1936 Ikegai Automobile developed a small diesel engine for a prototype TK. The prototype vehicle also mounted a 37mm Type94 tank gun. The size of the engine caused complications due to the small stature of the vehicle, and it was decided to design an entirely new tank. This led to the development of the Type97 Light Armoured Car. The TK was quickly phased out of service later in the war. By then, Chinese forces had acquired a number of weapons which easily defeated the armour of the vehicle. From then on, the TK primarily assumed a reconnaissance role.
