The most widely used rifle of the American Civil War, the Springfield Model 1861, or commonly called the "Springfield", is a muzzle loading rifle used by both the Union and Confederate armies from the beginning to the end of the American Civil War. It was favored for its accuracy, reliability and its effective range.
