Overview[]
The SU-2 is a Soviet self-propelled gun developed in the early 1930s as a joint project between the Leningrad Bolshevik plant and Depot No. 60 in Bryansk.
Development[]
In August 1931, The Leningrad Bolshevik plant and the military depot No. 60 in Bryansk were undertaking development of a self-propelled gun. A prototype vehicle was tested alongside the SU-5 - a similar vehicle utilizing the same design principals but with a different gun installation.
Both the SU-2 and SU-5 were cancelled after trials, where it was shown that the 76.2mm guns on both vehicles were damaging the chassis.
Design[]
The SU-2 is comprised of the Kommunar 9GU tractor, and the 76.2mm DP-1 field gun fitted on a pedestal mount. The body work was adjusted to fit an armoured pedestal mount, previously used in armoured trains.
The P-18 trailer truck would transport the ammunition, as the self-propelled gun chassis was too small to fit ammunition in addition to the large weapon installation.
