SIG Sauer is a Swiss firearms manufacturing company founded in 1975 in Germany, and expanded to USA in 1985. SIG Sauer was formed in the early 1970s when SIG purchased Sauer.

The company focuses on export, whereas SIG (and now Swiss Arms) produces firearms for Switzerland. The merger was founded to circumvent firearm export conventions in Switzerland, with SIG in Switzerland, and Sauer in Germany, this allowed international export.

SIG Sauer in USA imports SIG Sauer firearms to sell commercially on the American market, however it remains separate from its Swiss counterpart.
