The Rolls-Royce Experimental Machine Gun is a British prototype machine gun developed in the early 1940s for use in aircraft. Initially, the firearm was intended to fire standard 12.7x99mm ammunition, but this was scheduled to be changed to 13.9x99mmB due to mechanical issues.
The weapon did not leave prototyping stages due to increased usage of the M2 Browning by the RAF .
Development [ ]
The prototype was first tested at Pendine Sands in March 1941, where it suffered shortcomings. The extractor was prone to break or malfunction. The firearm also produced a large, almost blinding muzzle flash due to the short barrel and the 1,000 rounds per minute fire rate. A large flash suppressor was added to the muzzle, which was 127mm in length.
The decision was made to switch to the 13.9x99mmB later in 1941, and conversion was underway. Royal Ordnance provided 2,000 rounds to Rolls-Royce in order to test their converted firearm.
The weapon was not further developed, assumingly due to the adoption of the M2 Browning being adopted by both US and UK forces.
