Overview[]
The QTS2011 Integrated Combat System (abbreviated as QTS11, originally known as ZH05 Strategic Rifle, is a Chinese combination firearm developed in the late 2000s and early 2010s from the QBZ03. The QTS11 combines a grenade launcher, an assault rifle, and modern electronic optics capable of connecting to a soldier's helmet eyepiece.
Development[]
The QTS11 (known then as the ZH05) began development some time in the 2000s. The weapon follows a similar design path and principles as the American/German XM29 and Korean K11. NORINCO was heading development of the weapon, with multiple prototypes being trialled along the way.
Prototypes of the weapon have been seen with a magazine-fed grenade launcher, a bullpup rifle with underbarrel launcher, and different types of optics.
The weapon was revealed to the public in 2011, despite leaks of its development circulating earlier. The new name QTS11 was announced, and it entered service. Mass production began in 2011 with 50,000 reported to be completed by 2018. Each weapon was said to cost 500,000 CN¥ (about 78,000 US$).
Design[]
The QTS11 is comprised of a modified QBZ03 5.8x42mm assault rifle, a single-shot 20mm grenade launcher mounted above the rifle, and an electronic optic system with rangefinder.
The grenade launcher can be controlled by the integrated fire control system, with an electronic fuse allowing for controlled detonation of the grenade. This allows the user to fire a grenade at a target in cover by aiming above the obstacle and setting the detonation range to be shortly further than the obstacle distance. The integrated laser rangefinder allows for ranges to be quickly retrieved for use with the system. Multiple types of grenade are available, with the DQL12 airburst grenade being the most common. Armour-piercing, canister, fragmentation, and other cartridges are available.
Optics available for the weapon include conventional sights, streaming sights, and thermal imagery. With one set, the user can connect the optic to a eye-piece attached to the helmet. This allows firing around corners or over cover with only the gun and arms exposed.
