Overview[]
Project Abakan was a 1980s weapons programme that saw Russian design bureaus competing for a position to replace the AK-74 in Russian service. Several bureaus put forth several firearms, with the Izhmash bureau winning the competition with their AS, which was then designated AN-94. The AN-94 proved to be a remarkable firearm, however it is too expensive to manufacture for widespread use.
