Overview[]
The Pistol, 9mm, MK 22 MOD 0 (abbreviated as MK 22 MOD 0 Pistol), commonly known as Hush Puppy, is an American pistol developed in the late 1960s from the Smith & Wesson Model 39.
The MK 22 is capable of firing the MK 144 MOD 0 subsonic cartridge, specifically designed for the MK 22 when it is fitting the MK 3 MOD 0 suppressor.
Development[]
In the 1950s, Smith & Wesson developed the Model 39 pistol for the civilian and law enforcement market. After low sales, the Illinois State Police adopted the weapon in 1967. The U.S. Navy seemingly noticed this, and ordered a small batch for testing.
Tests on the Model 39 resulted in many minor improvements to the weapon:
- The barrel was threaded, allowing for the MK 3 MOD 0 suppressor to be fitted.
- The sights were replaced with high-profile sights, as the original sights were blocked by the MK 3 MOD 0 suppressor.
- The frame received a slide lock, to optionally lock the slide in place for use with the suppressor, as the operation of the slide was louder than the gun firing when fitted with the MK 3 MOD 0 suppressor and MK 144 MOD 0 subsonic ammunition.
- Changes were made to allow a 13-round double-stack Browning HP magazine.
- The frame was modified to allow for a detachable wire-frame stock.
The weapon was put into service as the MK 22 MOD 0, with an unknown amount being manufactured.
Service[]
The weapon saw limited service with special forces in the Vietnam War.
