Objective Individual Combat Weapon

Overview

The Objective Individual Combat Weapon (abbreviated as OICW) is a cancelled American weapons program that was undertaken in the 1990s and early 2000s.

The goal of the program was changed throughout, but as a whole it was to replace the M4, M9, M16, M60, M203, M240, and M249.

The OICW program began after the cancellation of the Advanced Combat Rifle program, with similar goals to replace the M16 in service. Ultimately the OICW program was not successful in its goals, but successful weapon systems emerged as part of development.

The OICW program originally required a combined weapon featuring a rifle and grenade launcher, but this was later split into three 'Increments'.

• XM8 — 5.56x45mm rifle, part of the kinetic energy component of the OICW program.
• XM25 — 25x40mm Counter Defilade Target Engagement System.
• XM26 — Lightweight Shotgun System.
• XM29 — Combination rifle/grenade launcher system.
• XM307 — 25x59mm automatic grenade launcher capable of using smart munitions.
• XM312 — 12.7x99mm machine gun, derivative of the XM307.
• XM320 — 40mm grenade launcher.
• XM1018 — HEAB ammunition.
• XM1019 — 20mm HEAB ammunition.
