Overview[]
The Ob"yekt 435 is a prototype Soviet main battle tank developed in the 1960s.
Development[]
The Ob. 435 is an upgraded version of the Ob. 430 with increased firepower. It was developed in 1960 in the Design Bureau of the KhPZ under the leadership of Chief designer A. A. Morozov on the basis of the order of the GKSMOT No. 141 of April 9, 1960. The prototype of the tank was manufactured by the factory in December 1960 without the main armament. The installation in the turret of the tank of the 115mm smoothbore gun U-5TS, which arrived from UZTM, was carried out in early February 1961, on February 14 the vehicle was sent to the artillery range near Leningrad, where it has undergone firing trials until June 22, 1961. Further work on the Ob. 435 was discontinued due to the creation of a 115mm smoothbore tank gun D-68 with two-piece shots with a partially combustible sleeve.
In the second half of 1961, the tank entered the Brach No. 2 of OKB-586 at the Pavlograd artillery range, which was used until the summer of 1944 for testing experimental 115mm smoothbore ammunition. After the tests were completed, the vehicle was returned to the KhPZ factory where it was fully restored and in July 1964, it was sent to Kubinka.
Design[]
The Ob. 435 was created on the basis of the Ob. 430M, on which, the FCS and turret were installed from the Ob. 430-2 "P". The individualized crew compartments have not undergone any significant changes compared to the base model, the crew still consisted of a commander, gunner, loader and driver.
A 115mm U-5TS smoothbore gun was installed with a stabilizer in two planes, a bore ejection device to eject after every shot, and a spent cartridge ejector. The Myetyel' stabilizer was borrowed from the Ob. 430M tank. To the right of the main cannon, there was a paired SGMT machine gun, with a second SGMT located to the left of the driver's compartment. To fire from the main cannon and machine gun, a TPDS-2-41 sight-rangefinder was used for daytime, and for nighttime, a TPN-1-87-23.
The tank's ammunition loadout consisted of 37 single-piece shots with AP, HEAT and HE shells and 3,000 rounds for both of the SGMT machine guns. There were 8 shots placed to the right of the driver, 24 in the rear of the fighting compartment, and 5 in clamps in the hull and turret. The fighting compartment also included 2 AKMS with 600 rounds, 20 F-1 grenades and a SPSh-2 with 20 cartridges.
The armor protection, the PAZ and PPO systems, power plant, transmission, chassis, electrical equipment and communications were essentially identical to the Ob. 430M. The only difference was that the engine and transmission compartment hatch was closed with two armored covers, in which the left one was sprung by a torsion roller.
The air cleaning and lubrication systems of the 5TD engine underwent minor changes with the inclusion of a communication valve, equipped with an electromagnetic remote control drive. The dust ejection system from the dust collector was changed and the air supply pipe for cooling the starter generator was removed.
The suspension had minor changes to the structure of the support rollers and caterpillar tracks compared to the base vehicle.
Compared to the predecesor, the Ob. 430, the Ob. 435 had the same disadvantages such as low reliability, breakdown of the gear ratios and a low engine efficiency. The results from the Ob. 435 project were later used in the creation of the Ob. 432 tank.
