The ErmaMaschinenpistole 36, commonly known by the abbreviation of EMP 36, is an experimental submachine gun developed by Erma Werke, based off of their earlier submachine gun designs. The firearm was produced in limited numbers as a prototype, and was quickly succeeded by the improved Maschinenpistole 38.
Development[]
Sometime during January 1938, the Heereswaffenamt had made a request for a new development relating to the field of submachine guns. Up until this time, many German military and law enforcement units were utilizing the aging MP 28, which had known reliability issues, and were rather heavy when fully loaded. Due to this, Erma Werke would emerge successful with their MP 38 design.
However, whilst the design of the MP 38 was seen as a great advancement when compared to other submachine guns during the time, the development was rather quick. This was due to a obscure prototype dating to 1936, dubbed officially as the "EMP 36".
Design[]
The MP 36 was a remarkable example of a submachine gun, especially for the era it was produced in. It featured select-fire capabilities, with a selector and mechanism similar to that on the later MP 41 design.
Unlike the later developed successor, the MP 38, the MP 36 features wooden furniture. The only markings on the firearm appear on the bottommost side of the pistol grip, which have a stamped marking which says "EMP 36" upon it. Another change that is unique to the MP 36 is the lack of a button for a magazine release, instead opting for a much earlier design choice being a lever.
