The Maschinengewehr 44 (abbreviated as M.G. 44) is a German vehicle machine gun developed in 1944 from the Sturmgewehr 44. The M.G. 44 is essentially an St.G. 44 modified to fit into a ball mount in a tank.
Development[]
The development of the firearm has not been recovered, only mention of it in regards to its use in the Panther F has been found. With the M.G. 34 ending production, and the M.G. 42 was proving difficult to mount in vehicles, the St.G. 44 was modified to fit the role.
It was planned to fit these new St.G. 44 tank models, known as M.G. 44, into production model Panther Fs, and possibly later developments of the Tiger II.
Design[]
The Maschinengewehr 44 is essentially a converted Sturmgewehr 44, with the front sight removed and the handguard modified to fit in a ball-mount. Drawing Nr. 021B51181-4 shows the ball mount design for the Panther F, where the M.G. 44 would have been fitted in a detachable mount allowing the crew to operate the weapon from one of the hatches it necessary.
