The Nakajima Ki 12 Experimental Fighter is a Japanese high-speed fighter prototype developed in the mid 1930s.
Development[]
The Ki 12 was developed in response to the failure of the earlier Ki 11 project. Although it was the fastest and most technically advanced fighter Japan had ever produced by the time it flew, Japanese authorities had concerns that its weight would inhibit agility and that the aircraft's foreign equipment would be difficult to license, so the aircraft was never put into production. However, development continued and eventually resulted in a successful design.
Design[]
Like the earlier Ki 11, the airframe was of all-metal monocoque construction and featured a low-wing dihedral design that would later become standard for Japanese fighters. The Ki 12 was the first Japanese aircraft to possess fully retractable landing gear or slotted flaps.
