Overview

With the Neubaufahrzeug no longer suited to the role of a heavy tank, a new and heavier design was needed. The Durchbruchwagen I (Breakthrough {panzerkampf}wagen) was developed. This new design was intended to damage defensive lines as well as replace the Panzerkampfwagen III and IV models. A single hull was made of the DWI, but the prototype was abandoned. Later, a new prototype was designed and a hull constructed, the Durchbruchwagen II. This model was essentially an upgraded DWI, it was heavier and also featured a hull-mounted machine gun. It is thought the turret design for the DWII was later used for the Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. C.
