Overview[]
The Carrier, 81mm Mortar, Half-Track, T19 is an American prototype self-propelled mortar developed in the 1940s by combining the Carrier, Personnel, Half-Track, M3 and the Mortar, 81mm, M1.
Development[]
In mid 1942, field experience with the Carrier, 81mm Mortar, Half-Track, M4 called for a modification to aim the mortar in a forward facing position. A field modification was undertaken by the 2nd Armored Division "Hell on Wheels" to the same effect, but the fighting compartment was not suited for a field conversion and as a result the ammunition capacity was reduced and the rear door was inaccessible. These conversions conversions however, were used in great number by the 2nd Armored Division "Hell on Wheels" and would be used until the end of the war.
The Armored Force Board began studies on development of a forward-facing mortar carrier based on the Carrier, Personnel, Half-Track, M3, with it being designated Carrier, 81mm Mortar, Half-Track, T19 by the Ordnance Committee in October 1942. The pilot model was manufactured by White Motor Company and sent to Aberdeen Proving Ground for tests. Trials ran from April to July 1943, with only minor changes being recommended before service.
On 7 June 1943, OCM 20846 standardized the prototype Carrier, 81mm Mortar, Half-Track, T19 as Carrier, 81mm Mortar, Half-Track, M21, allowing the vehicle to enter standard service.
Description[]
The Carrier, 81mm Mortar, Half-Track, M21 is essentially the Carrier, Personnel, Half-Track, M3 but with the rear compartment modified to fit the Mortar, 81mm, M1. The mortar is installed onto the usual Mount, Mortar: 81mm, M4 but with the baseplate installed in the rear compartment of the vehicle.
The mortar is installed to fire forward, unlike the M4 and M4A1 mortar carriers which fire rearwards.
