Overview[]
The Canal Defence Light (CDL) was a secrete weapon developed by the British during the Second World War; intended to be used in night time operations targeting and spotting enemy positions in the night the CDL also has the dual purpose of also acting as a method of dazzling or disorientating the enemy.
This could be achieved by using a pair of Canal Defence Lights in tandem flashing the light 2 times a second at the enemy as well as using amber or blue filters in an attempt to daze the enemy. However to this effect it requires two CDL vehicles present to cooperate with each other to attempt this tactic.
Often on armoured turret mount the CDL turrets often have a singular cylindrical light and a 7.92x57mm Mauser BESA of the spotlight operator.
Deployment[]
The Canal Defence Light was not widely deployed as the British believed that to maximize the effectiveness of the CDL it should remain in top secrecy, however this often results in the CDL being unknown to the British and American generals thus the CDL was not often planned in operations during the processes of planning for attacks.
The rest of the CDL's that did not leave with the 79th Armoured Division into France were situated in Britain with the British 35th Tank Brigade and US 9th Armored Group.
Bridge at Remagen[]
Despite this the Grant, CDL did see defencive use after the Battle of Remagen, specifically the Ludendorff Bridge which was of tactical importance and a significant moral blow to the Germans which then attempted to destroy the bridge in any way possible and have attempted in sending divers aiming to plant floating mines to blow the bridge however American troops and the Grant, CDL were able to detect and blind the divers. Interestingly the use of the CDL here reflected what has happened in it's time at the bridge. Being used as a "Canal Defence Light" in the most literal of senses.
