Overview[]

The BT-5PB is a Soviet prototype underwater prime mover developed in the early-mid 1930s.

Development[]

In 1934, NIBT Poligon developed a prototype vehicle from the BT-5 that would tow equipment underwater. A single prototype was constructed and tested, but the project did not proceed beyond trials.

Design[]

The BT-5PB was designed to tow another vehicle. An hour was required to prepare the vehicle using materials such as tarpaulin, rubber, lycra, and others. The vehicle would be towed at a speed between 2 and 5km/h, and after landing it would take 5 to 8 minutes to remove the towing equipment and underwater sealants.

During tests, water would leak in. After 20 minutes, between 300 and 350mm of water was recorded.
