Overview[]

The BAD-2 is a Soviet amphibious armoured car developed in the early 1930s from the BAD-1. The BAD-2 can be fitted with "all-over" tracks covering the rear wheels, which improves the ability to exit water.

Development[]

Development began in 1932 with a large team compared to those that were used for amphibious tanks. Improvements were made over the BAD-1, including a more aquadynamic frame. The new hull was fitted to the Ford Timken 6x4 chassis, instead of the domestic equivalent - the GAZ-AAA.

Production began in late 1932 for long-term trials for both the vehicle, and the doctrinal use of amphibious wheeled vehicles.

On the 1st of May 1933, the BAD-2 participated in a parade in Leningrad, where it impressed military representatives. It also swam across the Neva river.

Development was to continue by focusing on reliability and a more powerful main gun, which eventually went on to the PB-4.

Variants[]

BAD-2 ZhD

Service[]

The few BAD-2 vehicles that were made, entered service with the Red Army for long-term service trials from 1932 to 1934. Both Russian and German officers evaluated the vehicle during this period.
