Overview
The BA-30 is a soviet armoured half-track car developed in the second half of the 1930s.
Development
NATI began development on the BA-30 in 1937 with the goal to improve the all-terrain capability of the GAZ-produced BA-series of armoured cars.
The BA-30 was developed primarily from the BA-20, fitting a similar hull to the NATI-3 half-track transporter. The light overall weight and good power-to-weight ratio made the BA-30 work well in rough terrain.
The vehicle was extensively trailed in 1937, and was considered generally acceptable by the Red Army, however it was denied service as it was too heavy for the light armoured car class, and had no major positives over other models such as the BA-6 (which could be fitted with "over-all" tracks to improve off-road performance). Several BA-30 were none-the-less produced and eventually used in 1940 against the Finnish.
Service
In 1937 a small number of BA-30s were extensively trailed for the Red Army.
In 1940, several BA-30s were sent to participate in the Finnish campaign for combat trials. It is unknown the fate of these vehicles or how they performed.
