The ASM-DT was a Soviet underwater duel-medium assault rifle concept, later realized after the emergence of the Russian Federation in the 1990s. It boasts a complex design, based on influence from the previous APS underwater assault rifle, and similar concepts.

The rifle system features a unique concept, that being a duel-feed mechanism. This, in short, allows for two types of magazines to be accepted, determined by the environment above or underwater.

History

Following the pattern of success with the already in-service APS underwater assault rifle, the concept for a underwater firearm seemed necessary for naval Spetsnaz units, or Russian frogmen. The only notable issue with such designs is the lack of needed firepower for potential emergency above-water situations. Previously, the AK, AKM, or most commonly the AK-74 assault rifle, would be used for any aforementioned incidents due to the limited range of the APS rifle.

Interestingly, the first concept of such a rifle with duel-medium features dates back to c.1969, where Russian professor Yuri Danilov, who is credited with the ASM-DT concept and design, would apparently propose such idea. Meanwhile in 1973, the first iteration of the APS underwater assault rifle would be created, at this time, a physical representation of the ASM-DT would not exist for another twenty-years, until the 1990s. With the new APS seeing usage, Danilov would experiment on it, as sort of a platform or basis to continue his duel-feed design on.

Development

With the first concept being developed by Professor Yuri Danilov in 1969, plus the later 1975 inclusion of the newly in-service APS underwater assault rifle, it seemed as if the time for development was ready to prove itself on an actual physic rendition of Danilov's (at the time) sketches and other mockups.

There is no record, or really any form of evidence allow for an exact date on a potential first prototype. It may be inferred that Danilov continued his work throughout the later half of the twentieth century, until first production models surfaced to public knowledge in 1991. However, the most well-known prototype (pictured above) incorporates other elements from previous Russian-rifles. Most notably of these features was the borrowed 5,45x39mm cartridge for above water usage, also the side folding AKS-74-style stock.
