Overview[]
The AK-12 Balanced Recoil (BR) is a conceptualized prototype balanced-recoil assault rifle design, developed off of the AK-12.
Notably, as per most pre-production AK-12 variants, there is no actual nor physical proof of the rifle's existence. Thus, most information on the firearm may come from second-hand sources, or pure speculation about the concept.
Development[]
At least after the first rendition of the AK-12 prototype, the realization of the original rifle serving as the Russian Federation's new main-service rifle platform, the notion of updating previous rifle systems was most likely considered to expand the platform's versatility to fit a variety of different markets, and specified niches. Even before the AK-12 was designed, most notably throughout the Cold War, the Soviet Union, and later the Russian Federation, had heavily experimented with duel-operation systems as an attempt to negate recoil verticality from their rifles such as the AK-74, and AKM. The widest success of interest in a possible balanced-recoil rifle would result in Project Abakan, which later saw the highly experimental and costly AN-94 assault rifle as a result.
Since the cost of the AN-94 was obviously too much for widespread Russian adoption, simpler options would arise such as the AK-107, which made usage of the already simple and versatile AK-74M / AK-100 series. However, since other designs from Izhmash (merged with Izmekh, now Kalashnikov Concern) were already highly-theoretical, reconsidering the balance-recoil option would not be too outrageous, especially if applied on a new, modern platform.
Design[]
Due to the Balanced Automatics Recoil System (BARS) theoretically being the main element of the firearm, the overall design is very similar to previous rifles that feature the same operating system, like the AK-107, or even the AYeK-971 which first incorporated this unique system, with the overall exterior of the rifle is further updated to resemble the AK-12.
Another unique design choice was the hypothetical inclusion of a experimental 95-round drum magazine, which is commonly seen on digital mockup renditions of the firearm, although other 5,45x39mm AK-74 style magazines would have been compatible.
Variants[]
Prototypes
ConceptsA lot of these are considered fictional, as the only media using them is video games and photoshopped images of the official 2012 concept AK-12.
