Overview[]
The AK-12/223 is a Russian, conceptualized, prototype assault rifle derivative of the AK-12.
It would have been chambered for .223 Remington as a civilian rifle, with intent of worldwide export sales, most prominently, to the United States.
Unlike most pre-production AK-12 variants, there is some actual proof of the rifle proposals existence. Although no physical evidence exists, digital render mockups by Izhmash (merged with Izmekh, now Kalashnikov Concern) were created as proof of existence.
Development[]
Presumably, the concept of an export-friendly, modern Russian assault rifle to be sold to the worldwide civilian market was enacted shortly after the first (2012) AK-12 prototype was conceived. First (whilst never an actual, physical model) prototypes were seen as direct-conversions of the AK-12, accepted to feed from .223 Remington (5.56x45mm) magazines. There is also a shorter, assault carbine variant named the AK-12/223 Carbine.
At least by 2013, this configuration had enough traction to see an official 3D render released by Izhmash in late 2012. This is also when the rifle was taken into a more serious account, with a "second" configuration replacing the original design. This new look took heavy influence from the AK-12/76 shotgun, which also had now received a 3D render alongside the AK-12/223.
Design[]
The first 2012 concept proposal of the assault rifle utilized a look virtually identical to that of the AK-12 at the time. This means it would have such features like other AK platform firearms, the rifle would have used a gas-operated, long stroke gas piston, rotating bolt for an action system.
Later, at least by the 2013 mockup, the overall chassis of the rifle would be changed to resemble that of the AK-12/76 shotgun. This includes a new lower receiver, such as a magazine-well similar to that of other modern magazine fed assault rifles, like the American AR-15 platform, and similar AR-platform rifles. Also like the AK-12/76, the iron-sight was moved to be on the actual gas block.
Variants[]
Prototypes
ConceptsA lot of these are considered fictional, as the only media using them is video games and photoshopped images of the official 2012 concept AK-12.
